Tsuboman Atoma Diamond Plate, 400 Grit. An 8.3 x 3 in (210 x 75 mm) diamond plate from Atoma, made in Japan, with a dot-pattern diamond surface. In our shop it's a go-to plate for flattening waterstones, and it also works for sharpening knives, chisels and plane irons.

What it's for

• Flattening stones: keeping waterstones and other sharpening stones flat as they wear
• Sharpening: knives, chisels and plane irons (the tools shown on the maker's packaging)

Why the dot pattern matters

The diamond is applied in a grid of small dots, leaving gaps in between. Those gaps give water somewhere to go, which can help reduce suction between the plate and a wet stone.

Care
